Dissident Voice: A Voice of Integrity in the Canadian Media Fired Again

by Linda Belanger, Dissident Voice, February 21st, 2012

On Thursday, February 9th, 2011, Bell Media, owners of CTV and CFRA Radio in Ottawa, fired talk show host Michael Harris.   Harris is a journalist of the highest integrity, a Woodrow Wilson Scholar and award winning author of numerous books, four of which have sparked Canadian Royal Commissions.   He has been outspoken on Palestinian rights, environmental issues and the Harper government’s undemocratic behaviour just to name a few.

The station also fired 15 others on the same day but they were not controversial, high-profile individuals of Mr. Harris’ calibre.  Bell Media, of course, denies that he was fired because of his views and cites corporate restructuring as the reason for all the dismissals.   An examination of the facts indicates otherwise.  Two extremely right-wing talk show hosts were retained while Harris was fired;  one, Lowell Green, is 75 years old and in poor health and the second, Nick Vandergragt, is a recent hire and right-wing militarist who comes to the air waves with a strong background in truck driving.

Electronic Intifada: Zionist group fails to disrupt Ilan Pappe’s tour at California state universities

Electronic Intifada, Nora Barrows-Friedman, Feb 18, 2012

The California State University (CSU) system has sent a letter in response to a Zionist group, rejecting their claim that Ilan Pappe, an Israeli historian and a frequent contributor to The Electronic Intifada, should not receive CSU sponsorship during his upcoming campus tour because of his criticism of Israeli policies.

Tammi Rossman-Benjamin and Leila Beckwith, professors and co-founders of theAMCHA initiative, appealed to the CSU chancellor and the presidents of CSU-Northridge, Cal Poly, and CSU-Fresno, urging them to “revoke sponsorship of Ilan Pappe’s tour.”

Electronic Intifada: Paris university pulls plug on “Israeli apartheid” talk

Electronic Intifada, Feb 17, 2012, David Cronin

A Paris university has withdrawn permission for a Palestine solidarity conference at the behest of the Zionist lobby.

In a statement issued today, the authorities at the University of Paris 8 said that the title of the conference – “Israel: an apartheid state?” – was “of a strongly polemical character.” Because there had been strong reactions to its theme, the university predicted there could be a “serious risk posed to public order” if the event scheduled for 27 and 28 February went ahead.

The complaint against the conference was made by the representative council for Jewish organizations in France, or CRIF as it’s better known. It had objected to the participation of Omar Barghouti, coordinator of the Palestinian campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel. Continue reading

Stop Jason Kenney’s attacks on Palestine solidarity.

Palestine House has become the latest target of Jason Kenney’s ongoing attacks on free speech rights and Palestine solidarity in Canada. Last week, Palestine House was informed by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration, including its minister, Jason Kenney, that all funding for Palestine House’s immigration settlement program had been cut. Before Kenney’s announcement, department officials had praised Palestine House, a Palestinian cultural and educational organization based in Mississauga, for its highly successful settlement program.

mississauga.com: Government ends funding for Palestine House

mississauga.com

Mississauga-based Palestine House has had government funding for its newcomer settlement and language instruction services cancelled because of what Ottawa calls the cultural centre’s “pattern of support for extremism.”
Palestine House officials say Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s recent decision to pull the plug on funding — money that’s been coming annually for the past 18 years or so — is part of a campaign by the Conservative government to target organizations that support the human rights of Palestinians.

Ken Starr Pulling “a Clinton” on a Jewish Studies Professor at Baylor U?

By Keira Feldman, Religion Dispatches

“… the investigation consisted of “sort of announc[ing] to people, ‘Here’s what Marc [Ellis]’s guilty of. Now tell us what you know about him.’”

The rabbi began, “I have a special blessing-slash-prayer for Judge Starr.”

Early September 2010: fresh from a five-year stint as Dean of Pepperdine Law School, Baylor University’s newly anointed president Ken Starr celebrated the High Holidays with his Jewish colleagues. A former federal judge, though best known as independent counsel overseeing the Whitewater investigation and the Monica Lewinsky affair, Starr’s name is often accompanied by “Clinton nemesis,” or “yes, that Ken Starr.”

IJV: Demand CFRA FM Ottawa respect free speech

ACTION ALERT: Demand CFRA respect free speech

CFRA FM radio in Ottawa has fired Michael Harris, a long-time voice of reason on a range of peace and justice issues.

While CFRA is claiming Harris was laid off, he has been absolutely clear this is not the case. He was fired after a concerted attack from organizations claiming to represent the Jewish community, following a column last week in iPolitics that was critical of Harper government policies on Israel and Palestine.

IJV: Shaw bans video of peace activist author’s book reading

VICTORIA BC, Feb 4th, 2012 — The program “Our Way to Fight,” the record of an evening with peace activist author Michael Reardon recently hosted by the Victoria Chapter of Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) Canada, is being censored by Shaw Cable in Vancouver.

Pasifik.ca, who recorded the event and wishes to release it as an independent community program, has received an email saying that Shaw TV cannot broadcast the video of Our Way to Fight: Peace-work Under Siege in Israel-Palestine by Michael Riordon, as it is too ‘unbalanced’ and ‘controversial.’

Sign a petition to protest Shaw Vancouver’s decision to censor this program.

Stop FBI Repression: U.S. Attorney’s Office Confirms Investigation Is Ongoing into Palestinian Activists

February 4, Committee to Stop FBI Repression

The Northern Illinois Assistant U.S. Attorney Barry Jonas stated that the “investigation is continuing” into the case of the Palestine, anti-war and international solidarity activists hit with FBI raids and grand jury repression. Barry Jonas is known for his leading role in prosecuting the leaders of the Holy Land Foundation while he was trial attorney for the Department of Justice Counter-terrorism Section.

This confirms what the U.S. Attorney’s office related some months ago – they are preparing multiple indictments of multiple activists. The FBI raided seven homes and the government subpoenaed 23 international solidarity activists to a Chicago grand jury over a year ago. The anti-war activists refused to appear at the secretive grand jury and launched a campaign against political repression. The U.S. government is threatening to imprison anti-war activists on the grounds of “material support for terrorism.”
