What is the CPCCA?

The Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism (CPCCA) is an ad hoc group of Canadian MPs. It is part of a world-wide attempt by individual parliamentary supporters of Israel (and its actions in the occupied territories of Palestine and within Israel) to expand the definition of antisemitism and criminalize criticism of Israel. The CPCCA was established with little public notification and called for submissions by the end of August, 2009.

It is rooted in The London Declaration on Combating Antisemitism created by an informal coalition of Zionist supporting parliamentarians. CPCCA plans on submitting a report to Parliament prior to the next Interparliamentary Conference on Combating Antisemitism to be held in Ottawa in October, 2010.

The Seriously Free Speech Committee has submitted a brief (see here) and is providing either the full text or links to as many other submissions as we can find. This is necessary because the CPCCA has not posted submissions and held invitation-only “public” hearings.

  1. Not sure why you complain about ‘lack of transparency’? They’ve been posting the audio of all the hearings on their website. Plus, why should they be under obligations to hear from every wingnut who sends in a submission. Every committee on every issue gets more submissions than it can hear from – its the nature of the beast. Plus, I know of many submissions from Canadian Jewish & Zionist groups that were not asked to be witnesses (for example, the Federation of Jewish Students). Also, CAF’s argument of “we’re Semites too” is laughable. Yes, Arabs are Semites, but “antisemitism” as first penned by Moritz Steinschneider in 1860 refers explicitly to Jew-Hatred. Sorry CAF, but etymology doesn’t trump racism.

  2. Thanks, SFS, for posting all these submissions together. I have put this site on the required reading list for my Israel-Palestine course, which starts in the New Year.
